Not good: There is a circuit to control the motor's direction, as shown in Figure 6.

Better: The motor's direction is controlled by the circuit shown in Figure 6.


Plurals of acronyms do not have apostrophes.
Example: The project requires four MOSFETs, three LEDs, and two BJTs.

Exception: The plural of a one-letter abbreviation requires an apostrophe.
Example: The acceleration on one of the parts is three g's.

The possessive of an acronym is sometimes appropriate: The MOSFET's characteristics differed from the expected values.


Compound adjectives are hyphenated.

Examples:
a voltage-controlled current source
a high-efficiency battery
light-emitting diode
a 100-watt light bulb
a 470-ohm resistor


Numbers and less than 10 are usually written as words. An exception might be identification of a power-supply voltage, such as a 5-volt supply.
