Announce your specific subject as early as possible in the introduction.
Not good: "The study of microcontrollers is a vital and interesting one."
Good: "This paper addresses some of the more significant applications of microcontrollers,
including a hovercraft, a light-seeking robot, and a smart-house controller."
The statement of scope further qualifies the subject. It announces how broad the treatment of the subject will be. Often it indicates the level of competence expected in the reader for whom the paper is designed.
"In this report, I explain the application of super conductivity in electric power systems in a
manner suitable for college undergraduates."
INTRODUCTION
This laboratory experiment was performed to measure current and voltage characteristics in a dc machine used as a generator and as a motor. In a dc machine, if power is converted from electrical to mechanical form, the machine is classified as a motor. Conversely, if power is converted from mechanical form to electrical form, the machine is classified as a generator.
This paper documents the experimental results obtained in the laboratory. Laboratory results are
compared with theoretical models, and measured circuit parameters are determined for use by
students incorporating this dc machine in design projects.
As the conservation of energy and the earth's resources become more and more apparent, vital action is required to prolong mankind's existence here on earth, and many new inventions and ideas have come forth to help accomplish this. One such idea that still has not become popular, but might become very popular and even required in the future, is the electrically operated car. As with any other new invention, there come other problems that must be dealt with to make the invention functional. With the electrically operated car, there is such a problem. "Refueling" both an electrically operated car is done by recharging its batteries. These battery chargers act as a nonlinear load. If these charging stations replaced what are currently gas stations, this number of nonlinear loans could cause quite a problem to the power companies. We will investigate this issue, report our findings, and eventually produce a prototype unit that will cause the nonlinear load of a battery charger to look linear to the source.
